WHAT IS ARTS THERAPY?
Art Therapy is a mental health profession that combines creative art-making processes with psychological theory and therapeutic techniques. Recently reviewed under the NDIS, Arts Therapy is “evidence-based, effective, and at times life-changing when delivered by a qualified and registered therapist” (Duckett, 2025). It uses metaphor and symbolism to explore emotions, which are often difficult to articulate. Metaphors provide access to our subconscious minds, evoking enquiry and reflection of art material that may reveal underlying reasons for adverse behaviours, dysregulation and distress. Holistic Approach Art Therapy engages both brain hemispheres through a multi-sensory experience. It supports interoceptive awareness and self-enquiry, helping individuals break old thought patterns and find new insights for positive progress. Understanding Needs. As we often feel something before we understand it, Art Therapists help identify and support underlying needs through visual meaning-making and embodied integration. Working best to identify and practice the unique individual’s own tools and strategies whilst also working within an interdisciplinary team of professionals. Unique Experience Whilst an Art Therapist is trained in many different creative art modalities, Art Therapy is very different from an art class as is highly relational. During a session, your child may engage in various activities, such as talking, creating, playing, moving, singing, dancing, or acting. There are endless ways for clients to express their feelings, all welcomed with unconditional positive regard. Health Benefits Art Therapists are trained to use safe and effective materials based on therapeutic needs. The art-making process soothes the sympathetic nervous system, reduces stress, elevates mood, enhances creative thinking, and allows for creative expression. Playful Learning The arts are enjoyable and playful, and children learn to experience their world through play. Play in therapy allows a child to safely explore and rehearse life from a safe psychological distance with developmentally adaptable parameters.
